Stripmines. Those god forsaken places where the steel beasts of man have stripped away the fertile Appalachian soils and left behind a barren rocky substrate, a patch of desert in an otherwise lush landscape.

But in all destruction comes opportunity, and these ecologically degraded spaces present excellent opportunities for renewable off-grid power generation. Being situated in the remote locations where the sludge hub’s project leads are hard at work, these stripmine solar rigs keep our researchers and landowners flowing with the electricity that they need for their projects.
Cotuit Solar Company
The panels themselves are donations from the Cotuit Solar company whose legacy customers have elected to replace their aging panels with more advanced photovoltaics. When your space is limited, like a rooftop, you want to maximize the collection space. However, when you’ve got a massive stripmine with no space restrictions, larger numbers of older panels will do the trick just fine.
We offer these panels, free, to all organizations working on the ecological restoration of abandoned mine spaces. We also offer them to abandoned stripmine owners who agree to join the sludge hub network and avail their site to sludge hub researchers.
