The Sludge Hub hosts University Student Fellowship teams through Earth Island Institute
Earth Island Institute provides support to environmental action projects and to the next generation of environmental leaders in order to achieve solutions to the crises threatening the survival of life on Earth.
Earth Island Institute recognizes the front-line environmental justice challenges posed by abandoned coal mines in Appalachia and it supports The Sludge Hub's mission to transform them into ecologically prosperous spaces.
New Leaders Initiative Program
Established in 2000, the New Leaders Initiative program of Earth Island Institute works to support students with an interest in environmental and social justice by facilitating fellowships, grants, training, and mentorships. This opportunity gives students greater access to resources and relationships to cultivate successful projects and campaigns. The Sludge Hub is a partner to the New Leaders Initiative fellowship, bringing rising student leaders onto the team to provide them experience with a front-line environmental group.
2024 Cohort
The first fellowship between the Earth Island Institute and The Sludge Hub consisted of 5 student researchers from the University of California, Berkeley. Meeting weekly with The Sludge Hub team to present updates on their progress, each of these students was able to contribute their expertise to the team creating a robust cohort for the pilot program.
Deliverables
During the program, the fellows were tasked with cultivating a multitude of deliverables relating to The Sludge Hub and its seeded research space and community The Dirty Nine. Shown here are some of the external-facing deliverables created during the fellowship.
